Nengajo
What is "Nengajo"??
Nengajo means New Year's card.
People in countries that celebrate Christmas send Christmas card.
In Japan we celebrate the New Year more than Christmas.
Many people send Nengajo to be delivered on New Year's Day(*1).
(*1)We call New Year's Day "Oshougatsu (お正月)".
We write a short message before sending Nengajo and the address on the front.

If you receive a Nengajo from someone you haven't sent it to, you should send them a Nengajo by the 7th January.
If it is after the 8th January, we will send a seasonal letter called "Kanchu-misai (寒中見舞い)".
When there is an unhappy event(*2) in your life, you should refrain from sending Nengajo and send a "Mochu-hagaki (喪中はがき)".
(*2)When someone between relatives within the second degree past away.
This should preferably be sent in November or early December.
